Negotiations in the Federal Chancellery: Coalition trembles for agreement!

Parlament, Österreich - The coalition between ÖVP and FPÖ is on the brink! As OE24 recently continued the discussions about the ministerial posts after FPÖ-chef Herbert Kickl and ÖVP chairman Christian Stocker met with Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen. But what happens behind the scenes remains hidden. After only 42 minutes of discussions on Friday, the negotiating force withdrew and announced that things will only continue at the beginning of next week. Despite the mild progress, Stocker offered the FPÖ the Ministry of Finance, which Kickl has not yet accepted.

dispute over ministries and secret negotiations

In the past few days there has been a heated dispute over decisive ministerial posts because the FPÖ claims finances, inner and EU and media departments. The ÖVP remains hard and demands the Interior Ministry and EU coordination, which indicates a massive confrontation. The talks on Friday were characterized by confidentiality, and the agreement on the controversial division of departments is still pending. Stocker emphasized that the negotiations on a "balanced distribution of the departments", as well as orf.at reported.

The tensions between the two parties are clear. Kickl and Stocker had already left a previous proposal for the distribution of department between the two parties on Tuesday, which led to a setback in the negotiations. While the FPÖ is based on 28.8 percent of the votes in September, the ÖVP holds 26.3 percent. The question remains: How long can these negotiations be continued without more transparent communication and progress? In the political arena it is now time to wait and see whether these talks have a stable coalition or whether new conflicts will bloom between the parties.
