U-railway chaos in Vienna: trains run over Haltfenster-what now?

A technical problem with the Viennese subway causes unrest among passengers. The automatic doors at the U2 stations Karlsplatz, Museumsquartier, Volkstheater and Rathaus do not open if the train holds only half a meter from the correct position. This means that passengers are forced to continue to the next station, as the Kurier . The Viennese lines state that this happens about once a day and work to fix this problem with technical fine adjustments. As a precaution, additional personnel were used in the technology and service areas of the U2 stem route in the first operating weeks of the new doors.

The U2 is heavily frequented every day, with around 180,000 passengers and 480 trips, which together cover about 8,000 kilometers. Due to construction work that lasted longer than originally planned and the renewal of track systems and the renovation of the tunnel ceiling, there were delays. From 2026, the new U5 line in the section between Karlsplatz and the town hall will also be put into operation, which further improves the subway connection. A new subway tunnel is built at a depth of 25 meters below the existing U2 to create the U2xu5 station at the town hall. This will shorten the travel times, so that travelers can get to Neubaugasse in just two minutes and in about five minutes to the future U5xu6 station Michelbeuern-AKH, according to the Vienna lines in an official message.
