Tyrolean Museum Prize 2024: Honor for memory project and cinema museum

The "Oradour. Memories of Memories" project received the award at this year's Tyrolean Museum Prize and is thus recognized for its significant contribution to memory work. This prestigious price, which is endowed with a sum of 6,000 euros, shows how important such projects are for the cultural landscape of Tyrol. In addition, a recognition price of 2,500 euros is awarded to the carriage and local museum association East Tyrol, which operates a sled and carriage museum in Obertilliach.

The Tyrolean Museum Prize is awarded annually at the suggestion of the cultural advisory board for monument conservation and museum. The “Oradour. Memories of Memories” project was implemented by the Museum of the Peoples in cooperation with various institutions. The ceremonial award ceremony is planned for January 30, 2025 in the Museum of Völker in Schwaz. The governor and cultural officer Anton Mattle emphasized the important role of museums as the places of knowledge and cultural heritage.

innovative examination of history

The project itself deals with the dark history of the knife's miter in the Wilhelm-Erb-Stollen near Schwaz, where forced laborers were used for air force production in 1944. The jury emphasized that the project linked contemporary history with art, participation and memory work in an innovative way. In addition to several exhibition projects and concerts in Innsbruck and Schwaz, an extensive educational program for students was developed. The topics and places that have been treated, such as "Oradour" and various forced labor camps, offer a critical context on current social issues such as exclusion and injustice.

As part of the project, several publications have also emerged that support the dealings and memory. A permanent place of remembrance is set up to keep the memory of these dark times alive and to sensitize future generations.

recognition for cinema museum in Sillian

The additional recognition award for the carriage and local museum association East Tyrol is a nice recognition for the renovation of the old cinema in Sillian, which was reopened in 2024. This cinema museum has been lovingly restored and is now open to everyone interested. The club chairman Gernot Vinatzer and his team were congratulated by Governor Mattle for their committed work, which contributes to the preservation of regional culture.

This shows how alive the Tyrolean cultural landscape is and how important it is not only to preserve history, but also actively put it up for discussion. Such awards are not only an incentive for the actors in the museum sector, but also a sign of society that we have to learn from the past.
