In the parish of Zell am Ziller, there is great anticipation for the upcoming canonization by Engelbert Kolland, a Franciscan who was born in Ramsau in 1827 and was beatified in 1926. This important ceremony will take place in Rome on October 20 and headed by Pope Francis. Kolland is canonized with seven Spanish Franciscans and three chestnuts who suffered martyrdom in Damascus in 1860.
The preparations in Zell am Ziller are already in full swing before the official canonization. Engelbert Kolland, who originally bore the name Michael, was born into an eventful childhood. After his baptism in Zell am Ziller, he strived for an apprenticeship and completed his studies in Salzburg. Despite some setbacks, including interruptions of his studies, he entered the Franciscan order in 1851. He served in the Grabeskirche in Jerusalem and then worked in Damascus, where he was known for his pastoral devotion.
On July 10, 1860, Kolland was murdered during an attack during anti -Christian riots. His victim and his life story finally led to the beatification in 1926. In 2023, the process for canonization was initiated, which ended with the decision to halit him and his fellow marishy on October 20, 2024 in Rome.
