Security for Lienz: New concept for flood prevention presented
On October 31, 2024, an informative event took place in Lienz, in which a comprehensive study on possible protective measures against floods and mature length was presented. The residents learned that the Lienzer Bach is considered one of the most dangerous waters in the canton of St.Gallen due to its geographical location. Around 120 interested citizens had gathered to learn more about the four examined variants that could potentially contribute to the security of the region.
The proposals presented outline various structural measures to improve security. Options include:
- a mechanic discharge in the Leui area
- A guest retention in the area of Furnis
- the female of the Lienzer Bach into the Bofelbach
- A joint reallocation of the Lienzer Bach and the Bofelbach into the forest
public opinion and feedback
As part of the event, the residents were asked to give their opinion on the various suggestions in order to gain a mood. The response was very different:
- The options of a MURGESDADIEN in the Leui area and a stream amplification in the Bofelbach were hardly approved (0 Pro/17 Contra for Leui; 0 Pro/3 Contra for Bofelbach).
- The confession retention in the area of dirn received a mixed feedback with 22 voices and 15 votes against.
- The interpretation in the forest was by far the most positive (30 Pro/7 Contra).
The discussion clearly shows that it is important to the citizens that measures for flood security are quickly implemented.
examination process and outlook
The variant degree is now about to test by the federal government and the canton. These will evaluate which of the proposed measures can be approved. If several solutions are considered feasible, the city council will make the decision and commission a preliminary project. This is followed by a further examination by the responsible authorities. After that, the citizens are given the opportunity to contribute their concerns as part of a participation process.
A crucial step will be to create a support project, for which the legitimate persons and organizations can object. A public coordination on the financing of the protection project could take place in 2029 at the earliest.
The core of this initiative aims to prevent future misery, similar to the devastating incident from 1967, and to increase security for the Lienz population. The city of Altstätten relies on close cooperation with the federal government and the canton to ensure the protection of citizens and the local infrastructure in the long term.
