Safe communication: This is how the digital radio network remains active at Blackouts

In a remarkable exercise, the state of Tyrol and the fire brigades of the East Tyrol district recently tested their cooperation to maintain the communication infrastructure during a power failure. The innovative A location concept across Austria was examined closer to a closer look, which ensures that communication does not tear off in an emergency. This measure is particularly important, since fast and reliable communication between the operational organizations such as fire brigade, police and emergency services is essential.

The focus was on activating the emergency power supply and the functionality of the radio stations. If power failures occur longer than the battery duration, which is about 36 hours, these stations must be supplied with emergency power units. District fire brigade inspector Franz Brunner enthusiastically reported that all 15 radio stations in East Tyrol could be successfully aggregated with emergency stream.

efficient communication in crisis situations

The security councilor Astrid Mair emphasized how decisive continuous and safe communication in crisis locations is. She has taught her years of experience as a policewoman that every measure to prepare for emergencies, including more frequent exercises, is essential. "In an emergency, it is too late to make adjustments," said Mair. In the district of Lienz, which is often affected by disaster, the effective use of the digital radio network is particularly important.

The A location concept allows the fire brigade and other blue light organizations to communicate regardless of public energy providers. This is done by a special directional radio network that is dependent on a visual connection between the radio masts. This enables communication over large distances without being necessary. Technical trainer Bernhard Goßner explained that this system guarantees a completely autonomously operating communication platform in the event of a disaster.

The common exercise not only demonstrated the efficiency of the radio network, but also underlined the importance of training and regular tests. Ability to work hand in an emergency is crucial for the security of the region.

The efforts of Land Tyrol and the fire brigade organizations continue to continue to ensure sustainable emergency communication. In view of the challenges associated with natural disasters and other crisis situations, the training and preparation remains of great importance.
