Speech saves life: focus on suicide prevention in East Tyrol

In Austria there were 1276 cases of suicide in 2022, including 117 in Tyrol. This is an alarming number that underlines the urgency of the topic of suicide prevention. This cause of death often remains a taboo, which makes public discussion considerably more difficult. As part of the week for suicide prevention with the motto "Speech Save Life", an attempt was made to raise awareness and to point out the important role of communication.

The adults and adolescents who are to be strengthened in crisis situations are in the front row before serious considerations about suicidality occur. It quickly becomes clear that the reasons for suicide are extremely diverse. It is important to know that in most cases a severe psychological crisis leads to such extreme situations, which, however, is often not immediately recognizable. On the other hand, people without diagnosed mental illness also suffer a crisis.

The role of crises

Before attempted suicide, many think of this step, but often only as a possibility that is not yet specified. These thoughts often arise in phases in which the life situation appears hopelessly and dominates disorientation. In such crisis moments, the search for solutions becomes crucial; Outside help is often indispensable. The trigger for crises can be loss, overwhelming or sudden changes in life that initially appear positively, such as the birth of a child, but can turn out to be a burden.

For this reason, it is important to take every statement about suicide seriously. Many people announce their suicide request directly or indirectly, so that timely support is essential. Both material and social resources must be available to support fallen people and their relatives. Survivors are often under the pressure of prejudices and feelings of guilt, which makes a complete mourning process difficult.

In order to raise awareness of this topic, a hiking exhibition entitled "Suicide - no grief like any other" was organized in the Bildungshaus Osttirol. This event offered a free week dedicated to the clarification and the detabilization of suicide. Accompanying this, there were numerous programs for schools as well as evening lectures and workshops that also spoke to the general public. Social acceptance has been strengthened, fears were broken down and misunderstandings were clarified.

A particularly positive aspect was that the participants learned to recognize early signs of suicidal thoughts and to actively help. Young people in particular showed great interest in the topic. Experience -oriented elements such as the “Klagemauer” were introduced in front of the educational house to help those involved to invite stressful ones. A “Colorful Box” also gave the visitors space to feel the colorfulness of life.

The measures for suicide prevention are not only important; They are necessary to support people in crises and to put an end to the vicious cycle of silence and misunderstandings. The discussion must be continued in order to promote hope and confidence and to emphasize that help is always tangible.
