New bus offer during the rail lock: Your connection to Innsbruck
In an important initiative to improve public transport, the VVT (Transport Association Tirol) presented an expanded offer to react to the upcoming railway lock of the Puster Valley route. This lock will come into force on December 15 and is necessary to carry out the extensive construction work for the new Riggertal loop between Franzensfeste and Bruneck. While the number of bus connections between Lienz and Innsbruck remains unchanged, the frequency for the existing routes is increased by additional buses.
"We expect that much more passengers will use the direct bus between East Tyrol and Innsbruck during the lock," said the VVT after a survey analyzed the passenger potential in June 2024. The connections on Friday and Sunday are particularly in demand when many commuters and travelers are on the move. In order to operate this increased demand, the number of double -decker buses will be increased on the main routes from December 15th.
capacity increase of 160 seats
The new timetables stipulate that three buses will leave from Innsbruck to East Tyrol on F average at 6:35 p.m., while on Sundays at 5:45 p.m. four buses will start towards Innsbruck. These measures lead to an increase in capacities by an additional 160 seats. VVT managing director Alexander Jug emphasized that this should create a reliable alternative during the one-year break. "The direct bus will become even more important during this time," says Mobility Councilor René Zumtobel.
The Riggertalschleife, part of the extensive construction project, serves to better connect the Puster Valley to the Brennerbahn line. This new connection will not only be saved, but also improve the travel experience for rail travelers. An interesting aspect is that travelers from East Tyrol can switch directly to Brixen in the future instead of in Franzensfeste.
Additional measures for traffic jams on the burner route
In order to avoid traffic jams on the burner highway during strong travel days, alternative routes are set up via the Felbertauern tunnel. In these cases, an additional bus is provided between Lienz and Sillian. This step is intended to ensure that the passengers come to their destination on time despite the high traffic density.
The investments of around 200 million euros for the Riggertal loop are largely financed by funds from the state structure and resilience plan. This measure shows the commitment to improve the infrastructure in the region and to enable travelers more comfortable and efficient use of public transport, which will be of considerable benefits for all visitors and locals in the future.
