No direct rail connection between Puster Valley and Innsbruck in sight

The discussion about the transport connections in the Pustertal remains tense. According to the response from the Mobility Council's response, there is currently no view of a direct connection between the Puster Valley and Innsbruck. This information was asked by the Member of the Landtag Madeleine Rohrer, Brigitte Foppa and Zeno Oberkofler from the South Tyrolean Greens.

Currently, travelers who want to from Lienz to Innsbruck have to change to France festivals. By 2013 there was a direct train between these cities. But at the request of the then Tyrolean transport council, which the ÖVP belonged to, this was hired. At the moment, the travelers only have the regular bus, which takes about two hours for the route from the border community Sillian to Innsbruck. Because of this long travel time, the bus is not only important for locals, but also for other commuters. However, the bus in South Tyrol does not hold.

demands for better connections

In 2023, the state of South Tyrol applied for additional stops for the bus on the South Tyrolean section, but this application was rejected by the Tyrol Transport Association (VVT). Rohrer and Gebi Mair, the state spokesman for the Tyrolean Greens, pointed out inadequate cooperation between North Tyrol and South Tyrol. Mair criticized that this lack of cooperation harms residents of both parts of the country. While successful cross-border ticket cooperations exist in other regions, such as the connection of Kufstein-Kiefersfelden, it looks less good in the historical region of Tyrol.

The MPs have repeatedly asked when the urgently needed direct train between Innsbruck and Lienz returns. The sobering answer is that no direct connections are currently being provided in medium -term and long -term planning. In the future there will be a switch to Brixen when the Riggertal loop is completed. Brixen thus becomes the new hub for travelers from the Puster Valley.

planned developments and challenges

The answer to the request of the Greens makes it clear that a half -hourly time is currently being offered in the Pustertal and all available capacities are exhausted. Operational restrictions on the single -track route prevent additional trains, which makes the region very limited in its mobility. Without an expansion, trains can no longer drive, which reduces the diversity of the offer and increases susceptibility to disorders.

The MPs therefore call for a quick planning and execution of the expansion of the railway lines in the Pustertal. The construction of the Riggertal loop is only a first step. Rohrer emphasizes that the future use of the tracks between Schabs and Franzensfeste for direct and express trains to Innsbruck should also be part of these planning.

The discussion about the connections between the Puster Valley and Innsbruck shows the need for a comprehensive improvement in public transport. Even if the current Situation is a challenge, there will be hope for better connections in the future.
