Iseltrail: Tyrol's top project for sustainable natural tourism!
The impressive Iseltrail in East Tyrol was nominated as the best water project in the state of Tyrol for the renowned Neptune State Prize. This award, which is awarded annually by the Ministry of Agriculture and a large number of sponsors, aims to honor the most sustainable water projects in Austria. The Iseltrail, an outstanding example of sustainable natural tourism, extends over 80 km and leads in five stages from Lienz to the Glacier goal of the Umbalke in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Tyrolean environmental recruitment declared in 2025 the “Year of the Isel” to underline the importance of this project.
a project of impressive nature
The Isseltrail enables hikers to experience the breathtaking nature along one of the last freely flowing glacier rivers of the Eastern Alps. The focus such as environmental friendliness is: At every stage, there is drinking water fountain and rest areas in the immediate vicinity of the river, which makes the use of disposable bottles superfluous. Mobility between stages is ensured by free public transport, which also promotes environmentally conscious travel. These initiatives have already caused some companies to generate almost 50 percent of their summer accommodation through the new offer.
The voting for the Neptune State Prize runs until February 17th, whereby citizens can vote online for their favorite project. At the award ceremony on March 20 in Vienna, a number of attractive prices will also be raffled among the participants. It is a great opportunity for the Iseltrail not only to obtain recognition, but also to act as a model model for sustainable tourism in Tyrol. The strong local added value and the positive perception of the region as a sustainable holiday destination are immediate consequences of this nomination, as well as neptun-staatspreis.at reported.
