Energy from above: Evangelical community celebrates new solar facility in Lienz

Lienz, Österreich - On July 4, 2025, Bishop Michael Chalupka inaugurated the new photovoltaic system on the roof of the old rectory in Lienz. This significant event took place as part of a community festival, which the Protestant parish celebrated on June 29. The festival was laid inwards due to the fire in the Lienz valley floor. The photovoltaic system, which is located on the roof of the Martin Luther church, is expected to be put into operation from August 2025.

Bishop Chalupka emphasized the importance of cooperation with the city market in Lienz to promote sustainability and regional economy. Pastor Margit Leuthold described the end of the installation as a milestone in the “Energy from above” project. Gerald Altenweisl, project manager and sustainability consultant, accompanied this future -oriented project and pointed out the funding opportunities of the Tyrolean economic advisory funding, which offer a grant of up to 80 percent for sustainability projects.

photovoltaic systems in Tirol

Photovoltaicanlage.at reports that an installed PV output of 367 MWP was achieved in Tyrol by the end of 2023. In 2023, 146 MWP was installed, which corresponds to a significant increase compared to 55 MWP in 2022. By 2023, 24.5 percent of the PV performance required by 2030 was installed in Tyrol, and to achieve the goal by 2030, at least 162 MWP are required.

The Tyrolean state government actively promotes the expansion of photovoltaic systems as part of the energy transition. The use of large roof and open spaces is also promoted. In addition, the country plans to reduce bureaucratic hurdles to facilitate the further expansion of solar energy. Various funding opportunities are available for private individuals, companies and municipalities who want to invest in sustainable energy sources.

funding for electricity storage systems

The new storage promotion, which was introduced in early 2024, has already processed over 2,000 applications for network storage systems. The Tyrolean state government has decided to continue this support campaign by 2025. The goal is to increase Tyrol's contribution to the energy transition and to energy autonomy by 2050.

The high demand is shown in every day, with over 1,500 applications already submitted in the first half of 2024. From 2025, the funding flat rate will be adjusted to 100 euros per kWh for storage capacities of up to 10 kWh. The current renewable energy balance in Tyrol is around 58 percent, with the aim of covering the entire energy requirement from domestic, renewable sources by 2050.

The beneficiaries, both natural and legal persons with residence or company location in Tyrol, can apply for various measures for the equipment and retrofitting of existing PV systems as well as for new directions. The support for the sustainable energy sector is further strengthened and contributes to the promotion of the energy transition in Tyrol.
