Citizens defend themselves against new recycling center in Schönwies!

Gewerbegebiet Starkenbach, 6511 Schönwies, Österreich - In Tyrol, the planned construction of a new recycling center provides excitement. EWP Recycling GmbH has set the Starkenbach industrial area in Schönwies as a location for the preparation of plastic bottles and beverage cans. This is done as part of the newly introduced deposit system for disposable packaging, which was started on January 1, 2025. However, residents have collected over 400 signatures against this project and express concerns about possible noise pollution and odor problems through residues in the returned containers, such as reported.

The operators of the system then submitted additional reports to dispel the concerns of the residents. The Landeck district administration ultimately approved the facility on the basis of these reports. Managing Director Simon Parth confirmed that the system, similar to a large deposit machine, works: The delivered bottles and cans are recorded, sorted and pressed, whereby between seven and 15 truck deliveries are expected every day. Despite the concerns, the authority has determined that the system corresponds to the current state of the art and does not cause unreasonable nuisance.

The company has started to introduce the relevant technologies to make the preparation of plastic bottles and cans more effective. These successes could serve as guidelines for the Tyrolean project in order to increase the recycling quotas at the same time and to meet the needs of the residents.
