Loss of admission to universities: 2,000 students fail due to the minimum requirement
Wien, Österreich - Almost 2,000 students have lost their approval at home universities because they did not achieve the newly introduced minimum study performance. This regulation, which has been in place for bachelor's and diploma studies since the study year 2022/23, requires at least 16 ECTS points to be provided by the first semesters within the first two years. Over 1,100 of those affected come from the University of Vienna, while no cases were registered on ten out of 21 affected universities. The regulation has significantly increased the examination activity, which is considered a positive result. According to the Ministry of Education, the rate of students who did not provide the minimum study performance are around five percent, which corresponds to the number of new students in the winter semester 2022, which is estimated at 43,000.
The consequences are serious: students who do not achieve the minimum study performance must leave their approval for two years before they can make an application again. At the University of Vienna, around 524 out of 1,150 of the students concerned did not take a single exam, which underlines the seriousness of the new regulation. Significant number of graduates were also affected at other funding cities such as the Vienna University of Economic Affairs or the MCI Innsbruck. The Minister of Education determines that this change has achieved the goal of increasing the examination activity; In the first year of studies, they rose by two percentage points. Educational institutions are now required to make their courses better to support students and minimize the dropout rate, as well as Studieren.univie.ac.at These minimum studies affect all first semester and are also relevant for studies that are resumed after an interruption, which further increases the pressure on the students.
