Electricity prices rise: Households in our region have to pay 2025 more
At the beginning of 2025, the costs for electricity and gas in Austria will increase considerably. The regulatory authority E-Control has published the increase in network costs, which will come into force from January 1, 2025. For households, an increase in electricity prices is expected of an average of 23.1 percent, while gas prices can increase by around 16.6 percent. These changes could make annual energy costs for many households to make hundreds of euros.
The new tariffs have a strong impact on the network costs, with the increase of over 30 percent, especially in the federal states of Lower Austria and Vienna. Styria and Upper Austria also follow with climbs of 29 percent and 25.6 percent. In Burgenland, the increase is 23.6 percent, which is above the Austrian average. In Carinthia, one of the larger network areas, the highest power grid costs are introduced at 11.77 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).
development of gas prices
The gas network costs are also increased, with Upper Austria the highest increase of 29.4 percent, followed by Burgenland at 21.7 percent. Here, too, the increase in Carinthia remains moderate with only 1.5 percent. In Vienna, the gas network cost forecast is highest at 2.73 cents per kWh, while Salzburg with 1.72 cents and Vorarlberg with 1.78 cents have the lowest fees.
An essential factor for the drastic increase in network charges is the falling amount of energy related to the network with increasing costs for maintaining and expanding the network infrastructure. As a result, the higher costs are spread over an increasingly reduced amount of energy units used. In addition, important regulations expire at the end of 2024, which had reduced the electricity and natural gas taxes to a minimum during the energy crisis. Without a corresponding change in the law, the energy bills could increase significantly.
In addition, it remains unclear to what extent the renewable funding contributions and flat rates will be reintroduced in 2025, as these have been suspended or only partially financed in recent years. The combination of these factors indicates a noticeable increase in energy costs for households.
