Charity on the Christkindlmarkt: Young people set an example!
At the Lienzer Christkindlmarkt, young people from training fit again showed how to practice charity in the pre -Christmas period. On four days they sold lovingly designed Advent wreaths, gift boxes and homemade delicacies. The entire proceeds will go to the Tyrolean social services/emergency sleeping agency Lienz and the Rainbows association. "It is a great feeling to do something good and at the same time gain experience in dealing with people," said the committed young people, like Meinverzirk reported.
a sign against poverty
In Austria, poverty remains an urgent problem. Billa recently launched the Austria -wide fundraising campaign "a donation that makes you full" in order to provide people in need. The donation proceeds flow into the supply of staple foods and hygiene products. According to current figures, over 1.3 million people in Austria are affected by poverty, which shows a broad social responsibility. On November 17th, the "World Day of the Poor" will also be celebrated, a call to solidarity, which was launched by Pope Francis. Bishop Hermann Glettler emphasizes that only shared action can gain the fight against growing poverty, as the diözese innsbruck explained.
Caritas also speaks up and presents alarming numbers: in 2023, 88,000 children and adolescents in Austria were very threatened with poverty, more than twice as many as in the previous year. Caritas director Elisabeth Rathgeb warned that this precarious situation not only reduces the educational opportunities of the children concerned, but also increases the risk of getting into the same situation as an adult. In this context, the Elisabeth Sunday is particularly important for people in need, and is supported by the Elisabeth Collection, which aims to provide vital to use.
