Tyrolean National Council election: ÖVP loses, FPÖ wins massively in votes

In the results of the National Council election from last Sunday in Tyrol, there are significant changes. The Tyrolean People's Party (ÖVP) ended up in first place with 31.04 percent, but had to accept a bitter decline compared to the 45.81 percent of 2019. The freedoms (FPÖ), on the other hand, were able to double their voting proportion from 14.69 percent to 28.75 percent. The Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) also achieved a slight plus compared to 2019 at 15.35 percent, while the NEOS and the Greens can also move into the National Council.

The turnout was 74.14 percent and was therefore 2.3 percent higher than in the last election 2019. These figures indicate a lively interest of the voters, despite the bitter losses for the People's Party, which were significantly behind expectations.

political reactions

Tirol's governor Anton Mattle was disappointed with the result of his party and noticed that the ÖVP had not experienced the hoped -for refreshment at the federal level. "Karl Nehammer took over the party at around 20 percent and stopped the downward trend in surveys. For first place, it was not enough for the ÖVP at the federal level - in contrast to Tyrol -" said Mattle.

Norbert Tettschnig, Minister of Agriculture and the top candidate of the ÖVP in Tyrol, thanked for the trust of the voters and emphasized his team's efforts in the election campaign. "We were in use for the past few weeks and days around the clock. We caught up - unfortunately it was not enough for overtaking and the first place was not enough," said Totschnig. However, he made it clear that the People's Party wanted to continue to stand for its values while she is facing the challenge of why radicalized parties are more supported.

distribution of the seats in the National Council

According to the current results, Tyrol will be represented in the National Council with a total of twelve members of the MP. This balance comprises four mandates for the ÖVP, which loses two seats, and also four for the FPÖ, which thus increases by two seats. The SPÖ can look forward to an additional seat and will now be represented with two mandates, while the NEOS and the Greens each receive one seat.

The newly elected MPs are:

  • ÖVP:
  • Norbert Tettschnig, constituency East Tyrol
  • Margreth Falkner, Oberland
  • constituency
  • Josef Hechenberger, constituency of Unterland
  • Klaus Mair, constituency Innsbruck-Land/Schwaz
  • fpö:
  • Christoph Steiner
  • Barbara Kolm
  • Peter Wurm
  • Christopher Ranzmaier
  • spö:
  • Selma Yildirim
  • Bernhard Höfler
  • neos:
  • a mandate
  • Greens:
  • a mandate
In summary, it can be said that the political landscape in Tyrol has changed significantly through this election. Important topics will now have to be followed up by the elected representatives in the coming months and years. The declines of the ÖVP are a challenge that must be addressed to better pass future elections.
