Austria's Civil Protection Day 2024: Siren test and at-Alert-Launch

On Saturday, October 5, 2024, the civil protection day takes place all over Austria. This annual event not only provides for the test of civil protection sirens, but also the sensitization of the population to the importance of warning signals. This year the new population warning system AT-Alert will also be tested across Austria.

The security councilor Astrid Mair emphasizes the importance of preparing for emergencies: "Every person should wonder whether they are well informed and prepared for an emergency". She points out that civil protection signals and personal storage should be checked in the household.

The test of the signaling is carried out between 12 and 12:45 p.m. On this day, four different signals are called up: "siren sample", "warning", "alarm" and "all -clear". Flood wave sample arms also take place in special water storage power plants in Tyrol.

At the same time at exactly 12 noon, the AT-Alert system is activated to inform the population about impending dangers. Another AT-Alert test follows at 12:45 p.m., also for the all-clear. These tests reach mobile devices in the region and are covered with special test messages.

Austria has an extensive warning system, including about 8,300 civil protection sirens, 1,025 of them in Tyrol. These are strategically distributed in the districts and offer a reliable opportunity to alert the population. The municipalities are maintained together with the State Fire Brigade Association Tyrol.

The technical infrastructure includes alarm transmitters and an emergency power supply, which guarantee high availability of the warning system. This is crucial to react in good time in an emergency. The civil protection sample alarm aims at the fact that people not only hear what to do, but also that they are willing to act in an emergency.

Both the population and the emergency services are called up to better make these exercises better in their preparations. The tests from AT-Alert have already shown that the system can effectively serve for rapid information transfer in dangerous situations. This was practically tried out in previous flood events in Austria and has proven to be valuable support.
