Community strength: How Gleisdorfer give hope after flooding
The Gleisdorf region is on its feet after the devastating flood in June of this year. The Lantos-Kalcher family, which was severely affected by the natural disaster, receives not only financial help, but also new hope with the support of the Rotary Club Gleisdorf. Thanks to a benefit concert, the club was able to collect 9,000 euros for the family. This sum is urgently needed in the upcoming renovation of your house.
"We are very happy to be able to hand over this help. It shows what is possible when people hold together," said the President of the Rotary Club, Mag. Elisabeth Mayer, when the checks were handed over. Financial support is perceived as a ray of hope in an otherwise dark time in which the family must overcome the challenges that the flood brought with it.
shocking experiences of the flood
Astrid Lantos-Kalcher remembered the dramatic events during the flood. "The water suddenly increased enormously when the pressure pushed the door into the house. We could only snap our cats and save ourselves to the attic," she said. The moment was particularly painful when she felt cleaning up the sludge remains, how her life had been removed piece by piece so far.
The family has tried with an incredible initiative to make their house habitable again. Josef Lantos-Kalcher led most of the work himself, despite his age of 74. He invested around 1,500 hours in the renovation. He proudly announced: "We have been able to live in the house again for three weeks - not complete, but it will be homely." The new stove was only connected in the last week, which facilitates the everyday life of the family.
civic engagement and initiative
Günter Macher, a member of the Rotary Club and initiator of the benefit concert, experienced many fates in his role in the crisis intervention team. "It was clear: I have to help. Within a few days, we organized the concert. We thank everyone who worked with it," he said during the handover. This commitment shows the strong community spirit that is present in the region.
Mayor Günter Müller also praised the tireless work of the family: "Josef Lantos-Kalcher did everything on his own." The family gratitude towards the volunteer fire brigade and the community is great because both groups offered support in this difficult time.
The Rotary Club Gleisdorf is already planning the next benefit concert to continue to support helpful families. On December 4, 2024, the Cover Girls will perform with their Christmas program "It’s Christmas" in the Gleisdorf Forum. Admission begins at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Further information can be found on the club's website.
Through such events, the Rotary Club Gleisdorf shows how important solidarity and working together in critical times are. These actions strengthen the community and help to support people in need through no fault of their own.
