In the early morning of November 25, 2024, around 6 a.m., there was a serious traffic accident on the B70 Voitsberg bypass. A man from Graz and a woman from Spain were involved in a head-on collision that resulted in serious injuries to the driver. A rescue helicopter, C17, was needed to transport the 45-year-old to the LKH Graz. However, the 36-year-old driver of the other vehicle remained uninjured.
The woman was on her way towards Graz when the accident happened at kilometer 30.9. According to reports, their car collided head-on with the Romanian's oncoming vehicle. It turned out that the man initially fled the scene on foot after the accident, but was quickly found by the police.
Cause of accident and investigation
According to official information, the Romanian showed signs of moderate alcoholism. A rapid drug test also came back positive. As a result of these results, his driving license was temporarily revoked. The Voitsberg police station has started investigating the exact cause of the accident.
The Voitsberg fire department and the Krems fire department were called to the scene of the accident to support the rescue and recovery work. A total of six vehicles and 26 members of the two fire departments were on duty. The Red Cross and police were also on site to manage the situation and ensure safety.
The emergency services immediately began providing first aid to the trapped person and ultimately rescued them from the vehicle. Fire protection measures were also taken and the scene of the accident illuminated. After the police recorded the accident, the damaged vehicles were removed and the road was cleared and cleaned.
After more than two hours, the fire brigades were able to complete their work and return to the armory while the police officers continued the necessary investigations.
