Round table in Graz: Gaisfeld stop again in danger
The GaISFeld railway stop is again in focus after a closure threatened 14 years ago. At that time, the citizens' initiative was founded to maintain the stop, which successfully mobilized against the closure with 500 signatures. At the moment, however, the signs are back on storm, since the electrification of the railway line between Lieboch and Köflach is planned for the years 2027/28. The citizens' initiative under the direction of Ernst Walter has stimulated this development to new protests because the stop is considered endangered.
The initiative, consisting of six families and a commercial enterprise, has set itself the goal of continuing to maintain the Gaisfeld stop. Despite the previous successes, the mood is tense, because in the upcoming clock compression it is feared that the stop in GaISFELD could be eliminated.
The round table in Graz
The current frequency of the stop is also worrying. According to calculations, Gaisfeld has only around 40 passengers on daily, while the Krems stop at Voitsberg recorded twice as many passengers. These figures make the arguments of the initiative all the more urgent, because Ernst Walter and his supporters have collected signatures again - now there are up to 600 that require the maintenance of the stop.
statistical challenges
The location of the Gaisfeld stop, between Krottendorf and Krems, means that the numbers do not reflect the actual use of the stop. The student bus to Voitsberg decreases some passengers so that the static calculation does not record the real user numbers. Walter notes that the stops regularly use the stop from the surrounding areas such as Klein-Gaiskfeld, Teigitschgraben and St. Martin am Wöllmißberg, even though they do not drive every day.
In order to be able to assess the situation more precisely, Mayor Vogl and the citizens' initiative are provided with detailed figures by the specialist department and the ÖBB. Walter said: "After we have analyzed the data, we will have to decide on the further steps. But the confidence disappears."
These ongoing developments illustrate the uncertainties around the Gaiskfeld stop. A present citizens' initiative and a committed mayor are opposed to the impending fate of the stop, but the statistical conditions and political decisions could have a lasting influence on the future of the train station. It is currently still uncertain whether the stop will remain part of public transport
