Safety of children in road traffic: VCÖ analysis shows alarming figures in Styria
Last year, 54 children were injured as pedestrians in traffic accidents in Styria, according to a current analysis by the mobility organization VCÖ. Of these 54 children involved in the accident, nine were seriously injured. Of particular concern is the fact that four out of ten children involved in pedestrian accidents were struck on protective routes where children should have priority.
The road traffic regulations in Austria provide for special regulations for the protection of children in road traffic. Drivers must enable children to cross the street safely and exercise particular consideration and caution. Unfortunately, accident statistics show that these regulations are often ignored and accidents involving children occur again and again.
The VCÖ therefore calls for increased awareness campaigns, especially in the area of road safety for children. A speed limit of 30 instead of 50 in the local area is emphasized as an important measure to increase the safety of children. There are also calls for the extension of stopping and parking bans in front of protective paths in order to improve the visibility of pedestrians, especially children.
It is crucial to raise awareness among road users, especially drivers, and ensure the safety of the most vulnerable road users. Only through shared awareness and consideration can road safety for children be improved in the long term.
