Murtal chooses: The focus of the Styrian state election 2024 in focus

On November 24, 2024, the final round of the Styrian state election took place in the Murtal district. Of a total of 55,314 people entitled to vote, 37,367 made their votes, which corresponds to a turnout of 67.55 percent. 37,174 votes were valid. The decision was another important step in the complex political events of Styria, where voters had to choose between different parties.

The choice produced a clear result: the Freedom Party Austria (FPÖ) was ahead and achieved 36.53 percent of the vote. The Styrian People's Party (ÖVP) followed with 23.93 percent and Styrian Social Democracy (SPÖ) made it to 28.04 percent. Smaller parties were also in the race: the Greens received 2.72 percent, the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) 4.38 percent and the NEOS landed at 4.4 percent. This distribution reflects the political preferences of the voters in the district, which is important for the political landscape.

overview of the turnout

Compared to the 2019 elections, when the ÖVP also cut off a lot, there were remarkable changes. At that time, the Murtal district showed a close election battle: the ÖVP led 33.88 percent, while the SPÖ was just 33.29 percent after. The distance was just 211 votes. In this choice, however, the FPÖ was the clear winner, which may indicate a shift in voter support.

As a reminder: In the 2019 elections, the turnout was 62.63 percent low, which made the political commitment of the population a topic. This year, however, significantly more citizens have given their vote, which could represent a positive sign of democratic participation. Over the past five years, the district has held a stable population of around 71,580 inhabitants, which could also be a factor that influences the turnout.

political player in the Murtal district

The choice also brings the question of what role the different parties will play in the future political landscape of the district. The election results show that the FPÖ was able to strengthen its position, while other parties - especially the SPÖ and the ÖVP - have to develop new strategies in order to make future elections more successful. The dynamics of party politics could change significantly by this election.

The Murtal district is known for its diverse population and the geographical diversity that extends over 1,675 square kilometers. In addition to the district capital of Judenburg, important places are also Fohnsdorf, Zeltweg, Knittelfeld and Spielberg. In the coming time, it will have to be observed how the political landscape develops in this election, especially with regard to the new challenges with which the elected representatives will be faced.
