Upcycling project in Wagna: From bistro to film production

Joint commitment to the environment is at the top of the agenda for the non-profit organization naturstark.jetz. The Upcycling team takes on used furniture and brings a breath of fresh air into the world of upcycling. Instead of simply throwing away old items, they are restored, upgraded and given a new life. The team from Wagna recently managed to present a special project that even made it to the film industry in Vienna.

The organization aims to actively contribute to improving the environment through upcycling. With every restored object, resources are conserved and waste is minimized. The members of the team only use certified materials, which has the advantage that newly designed furniture not only looks beautiful, but is also sustainable.

In practice: Bistro sets in new splendor

One of the most recent projects was the refurbishment of a bistro set that was affectionately called “Over the Rainbow”. In a creative process, the set was painted in seven environmentally friendly colors. Each piece of wood was hand-finished and given a primer to ensure longevity. This takes into account the goal of conserving energy and resources. In the spring, the club managed to sell the completed set to a film production company in Vienna, where the piece now served as a colorful design element.

"We hear everywhere that we have to get into action. We think so too, which is why we're doing a lot more now. Even if it feels so insignificant. Upcycling benefits the environment, saves energy, money and resources. On top of that, it's very meditative and fun," says Christa Rakovic, the chairwoman of naturstark.jetzt, about the association's mission.

The association's upcycling project not only has a positive impact on the environment, but also supports social goals. The proceeds from the sale of the furniture go, among other things, into the purchase of trees, which are given away or used in 60 XXL hoopoe incubators. These incubators help to promote biodiversity in the region and have already been installed in southern and western Styria.

In addition, the topic of upcycling was discussed in a workshop for nature park schools in the Styria Nature Park in order to raise awareness of sustainability among the youngest. The team is not only committed to immediate environmental improvement, but also actively works to promote education and sensitivity to ecological issues.

"Next summer is definitely coming. The autumn so far has been very mild and sunny. We have already planned a similar charitable project for 2025. We were recently able to present our biodiversity on the screen at the Geidorf-Kunstkino Graz," adds Rakovic, looking optimistically at the association's upcoming activities.
