Bankruptcy strikes: what will become of 1,350 employees and their customers?

In a dramatic turn, numerous people in Styria had to worry about their savings, because a large furniture chain went bankrupt. Around 1,350 employees are affected by this bankruptcy, with 200 of them employed in Styria. Thousands of customers who have acquired vouchers or have already paid orders are now in the rain. The legal situation is complicated because the question remains whether and how these customers can get their money. As Orf Styria reported, in particular, this affects customers who have already made payments but are still waiting for their goods.

For goods ordered online but not paid, buyers can use their 14-day right of withdrawal. But for those who are affected because they have made a down payment, the situation could become far more difficult, since their demands may only be considered simple bankruptcy requirements in the bankruptcy proceedings. Expert Bettina Stiefwieser from the Styria Chamber of Labor explains that the reimbursement of the down payments is dependent on the quota of the bankruptcy proceedings, which will very likely be less than ten percent. Customers who hope for vouchers have to overcome similar hurdles: the registration costs 25 euros and is only worthwhile with a voucher value of over 250 to 300 euros, according to step meadows.
