new challenges in modern pentathlon
The last competitions with the riding discipline will take place in Paris in 2024. While the German team has already secured quota places for the Olympic Games in Paris, the switch to the new discipline has also caused mixed feelings among the athletes. Some have already started training for Obstacle, while others still have to get used to the changes.
crisis in the German Association
While modern pentathlon is flourishing in Austria, the German scene is faced with an existential crisis. Athletes have not been able to take part in competitions for months, which is tightened by a power struggle at the top of the association of the German Association for Modern Pentathlon (DVMF). In the presidential election in November, the vote in a stalemate between incumbent Michael Dörr and Vice President Jan Veder ended, which led to the division of the association.
The situation led to a stop of the funding and a ambiguity about the financial future of the DVMF. Athlete spokesman Patrick Dogue and others support Barbara Oettinger and their plans for maintaining the performance centers in Berlin and Potsdam, while Jan Veder plans to close the location in Potsdam. These differences make it impossible for the athletes to qualify for international competitions because there are no official squadlists.
The funding of the Federal Ministry of the Interior has been frozen since January 2025, and the perspectives for the athletes are dark. Patrick Dogue sees no quick solution to the conflict in the continued situation and suspects a clarification by a court decision.
The view of the modern pentathlon is therefore complex: While the talent in Austria is developing rapidly, the German athletes are fighting for their future in sport.
