Ecological turn: Graz sewage treatment plant will be extensively modernized by 2028
The Graz sewage treatment plant is faced with a comprehensive expansion and modernization, which should be completed by 2028. This ambitious project aims to increase the capacity of the system to a considerable 815,000 inhabitants and to meet the requirements of a growing population. With an investment volume of 83 million euros, not only is efficiency increased, but also taken into account strict environmental requirements.
This important decision was recently made by the city of Graz. The municipal council has taken the corresponding decision to make the operation of this central sewage treatment plant, which has played a major role in the region's wastewater treatment since its commissioning in 1979. The last adjustments took place in 2001, but in view of the constant population growth, a capacity expansion is now inevitable.
What does the project include?
But the increase in capacity is not the only goal. The complete renovation and technological modernization of the system are also on the agenda. Interest parts that have been in operation for over two decades are either modernized or replaced. This includes central components such as the hydraulics and the calculation system. The ventilation is also optimized and the existing biofilter system is renewed. An essential aspect of modernization is the expansion of sewage sludge treatment and the gas storage capacity from currently 1,000 m³ to 4,000 m³. This measure enables further energetic optimization of the operation and contributes to CO2 savings of around 900 tons per year.
costs and time frame
The overall investment for the project is estimated at around 83 million euros. This estimate is based on economic calculations from 2021, which were thoroughly checked by the city tariff and rated as realistic. This enables a solid planning basis to secure the financial means accordingly. The completion of the expansion and modernization measures is planned by 2028.
Mayor Judith Schwentner emphasized the relevance of the project and said: "The expansion of the sewage treatment plant is one of the largest and most important environmental projects in recent decades." This underlines the importance of the sustainable development of the city and the region.
The holding company, which is responsible for the implementation of the project, sees this expansion a significant step towards a future -proof wastewater treatment. CEO Wolfgang Malik and board director Gert Heigl emphasize that the planned expansion not only ensures wastewater treatment legally, but also that the standards of modern technology are also observed. The project also plays an important role in the context of the energy transition and climate protection.
The aim of these measures is to further improve the quality of life in Graz and to ensure reliable wastewater disposal for future generations. Details on this project include www.5min.at find.
