New parking garage in Graz: Murpark receives urgently needed parking spaces!
Liebenau, Österreich - The pressure on Graz's city government grows: In view of the overcrowded Park-and-Ride-facility Murpark, an expansion has now been decided. The existing parking garage, which has existed since 2007 and offers 480 parking spaces, is often fully busy at 9 a.m., as orf.at reports. The high demand shows that this location is a central hub for commuters and tourists thanks to an excellent connection to public transport such as tram lines 4 and 13 as well as numerous bus lines.
In order to do justice to the Situation, the city government decided to build a new parking garage in the immediate vicinity. A comprehensive analysis showed that an increase in the existing building would be uneconomical, since it could only create about 100 additional parking spaces. The land acquired in 2021 offer an ideal basis for this and have an expansion area of 13,613 m², which were bought for 4,405,000 euros including ancillary costs. Vice Mayor Judith Schwentner (Greens) was pleased: "The Murpark is by far the most promising park-and-ride location that we have in Graz," said Schwentner.
While the city regulation sees the expansion as an important step for sustainable mobility, express criticism. The NEOS call for an underground expansion of the system to better meet the need in the growing city, while ÖVP City Councilor Kurt Hohensinner indicates the pressing need for faster implementation, as Meinzirk.at reported.
