Graz researches: new technologies for clean L-vehicles discovered!
Technische Universität Graz, 8010 Graz, Österreich - in a pioneering project at the Technical University of Graz Researched innovative methods to measure the emissions of motorcycles, mopeds and quads precisely. This is done as part of the "Lens" project (L-Vehicles Emissions and Noise Mitigation Solutions), which is funded by the European Commission and includes several research institutions and manufacturers. After the catastrophic exhaust gas scandal from 2015, it has been shown that it is urgently needed to carry out realistic tests instead of only relying on standardized test stands, such as orf.at . The currently valid emission limit values only apply to cars, while there are no legal requirements for two -wheelers. Thanks to the newly developed measuring devices of the TU Graz, these vehicles can now be comprehensively examined.
Innovative measurement methods for L-vehicles
One of the greatest challenges was the development of lighter and compact measuring devices that do not affect the driving behavior of the vehicles. Stephan Schmidt from the Institute for Thermodynamics and Sustainable Drive Systems of the TU Graz explains that standard devices with over 60 kilograms are unproblematic in a car, but can strongly influence moped or motorcycle. A total of 150 vehicles were measured on both the street and in the laboratory to collect relevant data and test the adherence to emission limit values. This is crucial to offer manufacturers and legislators realistic basic values and thus enable effective regulation of the vehicles, as from
