St. Pölten train station closed due to bomb threat: investigations underway
In recent days, several train stations in Austria have been the target of bomb threats, prompting security measures. On Wednesday evening, October 3, 2024, both the train station in St. Pölten and Klagenfurt had to be closed due to threats.
At around 10:00 p.m., the St. Pölten State Police Department received an email in which a bomb threat was made. Immediate action was taken: the station was temporarily closed and searched, but no explosive device or suspicious items were discovered. Train traffic also came to a standstill during the closure, which lasted around an hour.

The police are now investigating the origin of these threats. "There are clear indications of a connection between these emails. They all have similar wording," said police spokesman Johann Baumschlager. The investigations are being carried out in close cooperation with the State Office for State Security and Combating Extremism and the relevant authorities in the affected federal states.
This series of threats began on Monday in Graz, where the main train station had to be evacuated after a similar email was received. In the following days, threats were made against Linz and Salzburg main train stations, with security forces always carrying out a comprehensive check of the stations. Each time the threats turned out to be unfounded, yet the accumulation of incidents shows a worrying pattern.
The public prosecutor's office points out that such threats are taken seriously and that there are significant consequences. Baumschlager warned: "There are severe penalties. The accusation can lead to serious offenses such as coercion and criminal association, which can result in up to three years in prison." The police therefore appeal to the public not to take such threats lightly and also recommend that potential copycat perpetrators refrain from such acts.
The current investigations are important to ensure safety in public places, especially busy transport hubs such as train stations. Comprehensive information is in the interest of both the safety of citizens and public trust in the security authorities.
