Austria's rail industry: innovations, patents and global export success
Austria's rail industry recently received remarkable recognition that is not unnoticed. Economic Minister Martin Kocher awarded the state prizes for innovation 2024, in which the Siemens Mobility, an important player in the industry, was in the spotlight. This makes it clear that Austria is not only a car country, but also a real railway country when it comes to innovation and technology developments.
The rail industry in Austria describes experts as a "lighthouse in export", which is clearly evident in the export numbers. In the per capita comparison, Austria leads the global ranking lists for rail vehicles and their equipment. According to the Austrian Rail Report 2023, the annual exports amounted to over 1.8 billion euros. In comparison to sizes such as Germany and China, Austria scores excellently. Austria's proportion of the world market rose from five to almost eight percent, while the country's population is only 0.11 percent of the global total number.
innovations and patents
Another proof of the innovative strength of the domestic rail industry is the high number of patents. In comparison within the EU, Austria takes an excellent third place, directly behind the larger nations Germany and France. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that expenses for research and development in the rail industry in Germany are the highest per capita in the EU and, thanks to its innovative strength, make a significant contribution to added value.
The Association of the Railway Industry (VBI) has gained in importance in recent years by bundling the interests of around 40 companies. According to a study by the Economica Institute, this sector contributes to over 28,000 jobs in Austria and ensures a total value added of more than 2.7 billion euros per year. "The multitude of highly innovative jobs leads to a broad thematic bandwidth in the industry," explains VBI President Hannes Boyer.
An example of relevant innovation is the “Bionic Wagen Box” by Siemens Mobility, the development of which took place in cooperation with the Vienna University of Technology and was awarded the State Prize Innovation. The 20 percent decrease in the shell of a subway car box not only leads to lower production costs, but also saves valuable raw materials and energy and lowers CO2 emissions. This new technology has already been implemented on the Piccadilly Line in London, with an expected start of the passenger operation in 2025.
The successes of the Austrian rail industry are not only limited to its exports, but also to their commitment in environmentally friendly innovations, which help to position the industry as a pioneer in climate protection. Tanja Kienegger, the head of Siemens Mobility Austria, emphasizes that the state prize innovation of her workforce in Vienna and Graz gives strong tailwind.
The combination of innovative technologies, high exports and a solid foundation of patents and research shows that Austria not only plays a key role in the rail industry, but also has a strong voice in an international context. The developments in this industry are of immense importance and throw a positive light on the innovative strength and future viability of the Austrian market.
