FPÖ celebrates historic election victory in Styria!

The current local council elections in Styria have caused a stir nationwide. On Sunday, March 23, 2025, the votes were counted in 284 Styrian communities. Loud Krone.at FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl describes the election results as a “reminder for the system parties”. The Freedom Party achieved a record result and doubled their votes compared to the 2020 elections. Kickl emphasizes that the FPÖ stands for “honest and straightforward politics”.

While the FPÖ is happy about significant growth, the ÖVP, led by Secretary General Nico Marchetti, has to deal with losses. Despite the decline, the ÖVP remains optimistic and continues to describe itself as the “mayor’s party” in Styria. Marchetti sees the FPÖ's so-called “blue wave” as broken. The initial results indicate that the SPÖ and ÖVP are suffering losses both overall and in most district capitals.

Results from the municipalities

In many communities, such as Hohentauern, the SPÖ achieved 52.9 percent and was therefore able to record an increase compared to 2020. The FPÖ scored 31.2 percent. In Bruck an der Mur, however, the SPÖ fell dramatically, losing 23.38 percentage points, while the ÖVP and FPÖ achieved increasing values. In Passail, the ÖVP recorded an increase of 10 mandates, while the SPÖ fell sharply.

Community SPÖ ÖVP FPÖ
Hohentauern 52.9% 15.9% 31.2%
Bruck an der Mur 29% (-23.38%) 27.5% 21.2%
Passail 38.62% (-4.94%) 46.9% (+12.6%)
Rottenmann 47.9% 7.7%
Langenwang 13.8% 47.9% 38.3%

The NEOS are also celebrating a “sensational success” and have won more than twice as many mandates as in the last election five years ago. Their result in Ramsau is particularly noteworthy, where they achieved 34 percent and second place. This election marks the fifth election in a row in which NEOS gained.

Increasing voter turnout and outlook

Voter turnout has increased compared to previous years. In 2020 it was 62.2 percent. The results from the ballot boxes have not yet been fully evaluated, especially in the district capitals.

As the ORF Styria reports, the political landscape in Styria will be reassessed this election day. The developments in the coming weeks could be decisive for the future political orientation of the communities.
