Summer construction sites in Vienna: traffic chaos for commuters and tourists!
Wien, Österreich - In Vienna, a comprehensive construction measure ensures considerable traffic disruptions. Ring renovations are currently taking place on the Carinthian ring and on Schwarzenbergplatz, which have been in full swing since June 24, 2025. The Viennese lines use the summer months to carry out renovations in the tram and subway network. The track modernization includes a total of around 11 kilometers of new tracks and 45 course, which is an important infrastructure project for the city, but also brings massive restrictions for passengers.
Traffic has been severely impaired since construction began. While the work initially took place on two traces from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., no lanes are now no longer available during the day. Drivers report from up to 30 minutes of delays in early traffic. Only a lane is maintained on Schwarzenbergplatz, which also tightens the situation. The tram currently does not run between Schubertring and Volkstheater, which means that lines D, 1 and 2 had to be redirected. Line 71 only runs between Enkplatz and Kaiserebersdorf, while a replacement bus 71E commutes between Karlsplatz and St. Marx. Many passengers stood in vain at stops during construction and had to switch to alternative means of transport.
traffic disruptions and diversions
The diversions and construction site measures not only affect the stream lines. Line 18 also receives 2.4 kilometers of new tracks in Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Schlachhausgasse, which leads to further detours and route locks. This work lasts from March to the beginning of July and from late August to September 2025. Currently, line 18 only runs between Burggasse, Stadthalle and Fasangasse. From the Fasangasse, Rennweg and Landstraße U S-Bahn stations are redirected to the final stop Matthäusgasse.
The construction work on the Margaret belt also has an impact on traffic. Line 18 will be completely stopped from the beginning of July to the end of August 2025. In addition, track construction work in Jörgerstrasse runs until September, which requires the diversions for line 43 between Elterleinplatz and Gersthof. During the entire construction phase, passengers have the opportunity to avoid lines 42, 2 and 44 that run over the usual route with compressed intervals.
outlook for the coming weeks
The Viennese lines have also announced a detailed planning of the diversions for the coming weeks. Between July 1 and 31, 2025, there will be several construction phases with identical diversions, whereby the Parliament stop cannot be operated for line 2. From August 11, 2025, lines 1 and 2 should then go back to normal operation, while line D continues to be redirected.
The extensive track construction work in the city is part of a comprehensive modernization concept of the Vienna lines, which is also welcomed by the passengers, but requires a certain patience due to the current traffic chaos. For more information on the current construction sites and diversions, interested parties can visit the website of the Wiener Linien. Further details are also available there .
Overall, the current situation in Vienna shows how important infrastructure developments are, at the same time citizens have to set themselves in traffic for a while with restrictions and more time.
