Scandal for dismissal: Theater leader causes excitement in Salzburg!

Perner-Insel, 5020 Salzburg, Österreich - On Tuesday, the Salzburg Festival directorate presented the program for 2025, while the waves are lying down to the discharge of the acting chief Marina Davydova. The director Kirill Serebrennikov commented on Instagram about his dismay about the decision that Davydova was made on the basis of an alleged "contract fracture". He criticized them as unjust and overthrown, especially since it was seen as support for a Berlin festival for artists living in exile. Serebrennikov, which prepares the staging of "The Snowstorm" according to a novel by Vladimir Sorokin, emphasized that this decision could throw shadows on the estimated festival for which he worked, reported the Kleine Zeitung .

reactions to the discharge

The release of Davydova triggered violent reactions in the cultural scene. The Polish theater director Krystian Lupa expressed its outrage over the procedure via Facebook. He described the festival as a cultural event with an international reputation, which, however, remained "in a well -deserved stagnation". For him, the methods of their dismissal indicate fear and uncertainty. These concerns are reinforced by the short and abrupt reasons that led to their termination, such as Kurier reported.

It is also striking that the discharge took place in an extremely tight form, as Audronis Liuga, director of the Jaunimo Teatras in Vilnius, criticized. No discussion was held: Davydova was terminated without notice and during a session of her program. This sudden decision leaves questions about internal communication and the principles of decision -making within the Salzburg Festival.

Despite the unrest around the personnel change, there are a number of exciting performances that were announced in the 2025 festival program. Among other things, productions by Dmitri Tcherniakov and Barrie Kosky as well as the new staging of "Jedermann" with Philipp Hochmair are planned. The festival, which takes place from July 18 to August 31, offer a total of 174 performances.
