Scandal in the National Council: FPÖ criticizes Selenskyj's visit to Vienna violently!

On June 16, 2025, a heated debate took place in the National Council, in the course of which Dagmar Belakovich, Member of the National Council of FPÖ, Neos club chairman Yannick Shetty criticized. The occasion was Shetty's accusation that no FPÖ MP had participated in the National Council's delegation trip to Ukraine. Shetty recalled his emotional visit to Butscha, where he stood in front of mass graves and spoke to the parents of murdered children. However, Belakowitsch rejected this serious background with an interjection that Shetty described as a "underground Putin propaganda" and was outraged about the shocking comment during a commemorative day. Belakovich received an order call for her statements, which further heated up the minds.

During the debate, the FPÖ's allegations against the state visit by Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj in Vienna were also loud. Shetty described FPÖ's criticism as a populist maneuver and accused them of wanting to split society. In addition, the FPÖ made an urgent request to Chancellor Christian Stocker, in which it spoke to the topic of "Austria's neutrality in danger".

political reactions to the Selenskyj visit

The opinions about Selenskyj's visit to Vienna diverge. FPÖ federal party chairman Herbert Kickl described the reception as a foreign policy wrong path, especially in the context of over 70 years of state contract and neutrality. He called for answers to endanger Austria's foreign policy credibility. In his criticism, he referred to the 327 million euros already achieved in support for Ukraine and expressed concerns about the tolerance of "state enemy lists" by Ukraine, on which Austrian citizens were also noted.

On the other hand,

Alexander Pröll, State Secretary and representation of the prevented Chancellor, confirmed the support of Austria for Ukraine and warned of a perpetrator-victim reversal by the FPÖ. Green club chairman Werner Kogler described the FPÖ reviews as absurd. SPÖ foreign policy spokeswoman Petra Bayr in turn called the argumentation of the FPÖ "completely crazy" and emphasized the need for controversy in the role of Austria as a neutral state.

Austria's position in the geopolitical context

The visit of President Selenskyj took place in a tense geopolitical environment, with intensive arguments between NATO and Russia. Kickl, on the other hand, calls for a return to Austria's foreign policy role and real peace talks without political preconditions. He is firmly convinced that the neutrality of Austria is not a discontinued model and sees the FPÖ as the voice of reason in this debate.

In summary, it can be said that the debate in the National Council is not only a mirror of current political tensions in Austria, but also shows the challenges with which Austrian foreign policy is confronted. It remains to be seen whether the FPÖ will be heard with its demands or whether Austria remains strictly neutral.
