Schrems on the way to the first Wetland City in German -speaking countries!

Schrems, Österreich - The city of Schrems takes a crucial step towards ecological recognition and sustainable urban development. In December 2024, a fundamental decision was made in the Schrems municipal council to start the process for the application as the first "Wetland City" in German -speaking countries. This endeavor represents an important initiative to rise to an international league of 74 cities in 27 countries worldwide. The application is scheduled for autumn 2026, followed by an accreditation in 2028. Mayor David Süß emphasizes that activities in the region should increase the chances of maintaining the status.

A local committee, which was put together by Süß, brings together around 25 committed people. Among them are experts from different areas, which bring expertise to ecological, economic and social aspects. The coordination is responsible for Sebastian Bohrn Mena from the Común Foundation, and there are representatives of all municipal council groups, economic experts, a moor biologist, a professor of ecosystem research, a forest ambassador, as well as representatives of nature parks, schools and civil society organizations.

The importance of wetlands is also emphasized by State Councilor Susanne Roskranz, which draws attention to their influence on the climate, water balance and biodiversity. As part of this application, the residents of Schrems should be made to “ambassadors” for the wetlands. This is done in particular through workshops with experts who convey the knowledge of the importance of the importance of these ecosystems.

activities to raise awareness of the population will start on August 15, 2025 with a family festival in the Moordbad Schrems under the motto "Wunderwelt Wasser". The events and training courses are aimed not only at adults, but also to families and are accessible with free admission. These efforts are supported by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Environmental and Climate Protection.

sustainable urban development in the global context

The application of Schrems can be seen against the background of global urbanization, which, according to the UN forecasts, could lead to up to 70% of the world's population in cities. Urban wetlands play a crucial role in absorb excess water during storms and thus prevent flooding. The protection and sustainable use of wetlands are integral components of urban development, especially if one considerations the challenges of urbanization, which often result in using natural areas.

currently around four billion people live in urban areas, which already makes up half of the world's population. The increase in these figures brings with it dangers for the preservation of wetlands, which are often considered an unused country. The accreditation as Wetland City could not only bring ecological but also social and economic benefits for Schrems.

In addition, the International Wetland City accreditation enables cities that appreciate their wetlands, to raise an increased awareness of the importance of these ecosystems and to actively participate in municipal planning processes. In this context, 172 contracting parties of the convention have agreed the protection and sustainable use of wetlands in their areas, which underlines global relevance.
