Slamm avalanche in Borca: Emergency in Belluno called!
On June 16, 2025, a serious emergency came in Borca di Cadore, a municipality in the Veneto region, Italy. After violent heavy rain, there was a devastating mudslide that damaged several buildings and made many streets impassable. Around 20 buildings suffered damage, some of them considerably. Vehicles were carried away in the muries and numerous access trips were spilled. For months of rain, the slopes had made unstable and a sudden rain of 50 millimeters within a few hours triggered the disaster.
Several people were temporarily locked in their houses thanks to the rapid reaction of the rescue workers, but could be saved unscathed. There were no injuries, but the fire brigade was in constant use to eliminate the blockages and to ensure the safety of the structural integrity of the affected buildings. In addition, there were power failures and traffic disruptions that further difficult.
emergency and measures
The regional government called Veneto, under President Luca Zaia, the emergency for the province of Belluno under President Luca Zaia. The aim of this measure is to provide both financial and technical resources to help the affected population and to support the reconstruction. ZAIA has already announced further security measures to prevent future disasters.
The dangers from landslide in the Dolomite region are not new. Experts have been warning of increasing natural hazards for years, which are reinforced by climatic changes. The landslide in Cancia is a particularly tragic example, because in 2009 two people lost their lives at a similar event.
early warning systems as a lifesaver?
The importance of early warning systems and protective structures becomes increasingly clear in the context of such natural disasters. The UN report on early warning systems in natural disasters emphasizes that effective measures can not only prevent worse things, but also save lives. In many cases, however, according to the report, not all people can be warned in good time and brought to safety. Therefore, the need for better protective measures and timely information in endangered regions such as the Dolomite region is of crucial importance.
The incident once again shows how important preventive measures and comprehensive emergency planning are in order to minimize the risks for the population in such highly dangerous areas. While the immediate rescue measures were successful, the question remains how sustainably the solutions can be designed for the future.
