Schilling is reminiscent of: 100 years of nostalgia in Austria's money history!

In Austria, an impressive sum of almost 6.8 billion shillings is still unused in payment transactions. This old load from the time before the euro has currently reported around 495 million euros, as both 5 minutes and Puls24. Many of these shillings set a hidden existence in the domestic households - often in old clothes, between the sides of forgotten books or on dusty attics. The well-known "blue" (1000 notes) and "Mozarts" (5000 notes) are particularly often found. In 2024, around 18.4 million shillings have been exchanged in euros so far, which corresponds to around 1.3 million euros.

exchange and nostalgia

The monthly exchange requests fluctuate by around 1.5 million Schilling at the Austrian National Bank (OENB), but the majority of the money remains in circulation. In the course of the currency change, which has established the euro as an official means of payment since 2002, the OENB continues to keep banknotes worth around 3 billion shillings and coins worth 3.8 billion shillings. Most banknotes, especially the 20-shilling notes and 100 shilling notes, are exchanged for euros per month. One euro corresponds constant 13,7603 Schilling, which maintains the nostalgic value of the old currency.

In the second half of 2025,

Schilling lovers can look forward to a special exhibition in the OENB money museum, which will be devoted to Schilling and its introduction 100 years ago. This currency, which was used from 1925 to 1938 and then from 1945 until the introduction of the euro, has established itself as a piece of Austrian history that arouses nostalgic feelings, such as 5 Minutes and Puls24 report
