Pilot project in Salzburg: School gymnasiums now open on Saturdays!
From October 19, a new pilot project starts in Salzburg, which will delight sports enthusiasts and clubs. At two middle schools, the MS Liefering and the MS Taxham, the urban school gymnasiums will also be available on Saturdays. This means a significant expansion of the possibilities for indoor training and sporting events, especially in the cold season when the need for sealed sports areas increases.
The opening times are planned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the offer is aimed primarily at urban -funded sports clubs and people who would like to remain active. Mayor Bernhard Auinger, who initiated the pilot project, emphasizes: "This attempt is a reaction to the wishes of the clubs and the population. We want to facilitate access to mass sports."
growing demand for indoor sports
The school gymnasiums are already being rented out for sports clubs from Monday to Friday outside of classes. So far, however, using the halls at the weekend was severely restricted and only possible for championship games or international tournaments. This has prompted many sports clubs to express the wish to train on weekends. According to a survey on the sports management of the city of Salzburg, this need has only been confirmed, since around 140 sports clubs are active in Salzburg and serve around 800 different user groups.
The versatility of the sports offer in the school gymnasiums is remarkable and includes a wide range of disciplines: from football and volleyball to various martial arts to basketball and back gymnastics. The Stadtsaltzburg hopes for valuable knowledge from this new offer in order to be able to better use the school gymnasiums in the long term. After a semester, the use should be evaluated to decide how to proceed.
For those interested, there is some important information about space reservation: the rent is 32.87 euros per hour, with discounts for members of the recognized sports roof associations and for non-commercial courses for children under the age of 15. The reservation can be made through the school office, with Johannes Eder available as a contact person. It can be contacted on 0662/8072-3472.
Overall, this pilot project seems to steer the city of Salzburg in the right direction by wanting to promote access to sporting activities for everyone. The halls are not only used for sporting activities but also to promote the community spirit, which is created in the various clubs and groups. This will certainly be a positive development for the sports landscape in Salzburg, which now receives another home for training and sporting activities.
