In the city of Salzburg, a fascinating custom continues to attract many people. The Krampus and Perchtenverein Maxglan, founded in 2008, celebrates this tradition with a number of events that take place especially during the months from October to January.
A highlight in the event calendar is the move on December 8, in which numerous groups from the region take part. Chairman Adi Sedetka, who has lived in Salzburg for 30 years, organizes these appearances with a lot of commitment. "For our events, thousands of spectators who admire the impressive masks and costumes are regularly available," explains Sedetka, who has also been proud of a special children's group in the club in his role as chairman.
child -friendly mediation of customs
The Maxglaner Teufel have set themselves the goal of presenting the figures that are often perceived as creepy. Your children's group, which currently has twelve members, actively takes part in the moves so that the young visitors can experience tradition without fear. "We want to bring the positive aspects of custom closer to the children," continued Sedetka.
The activities of the association are not only limited to the city of Salzburg. The members also organize home visits and private celebrations to keep the custom alive and tell people the stories behind it. "It is important that traditions are not forgotten," explains the chairman.
The move on December 8th is not only a festivity, but also a possibility of community, because around 45 groups from Salzburg, Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Bavaria are already registered, including many groups of children. Sedetka emphasizes: "I make sure that everything runs peacefully and smoothly, supported by our security forces and the police."
Part of the income of these events flows into charitable projects. In recent years, the local parish Maxglan has been supported, which distributes the money to needy families. "We are proud that our work really makes a difference," added Sedetka. For the upcoming event, the association hopes for around 20,000 visitors, which would be a new record.
search for a new clubhouse
During the success and popularity of the association, the Maxglaner Teufel also face challenges. For some time now, they have been looking for a new place for their club activities. Sedetka explains: "We were three rabbits in the inn for a long time, but it is closed on Saturday, although many members only have time on this day." For the chairman, a room of around 50 square meters would be ideal to hold meetings and organize other events. For 2025, the association is already planning a darts tournament that goes beyond the traditional Krampus events.
The customs of the Maxglaner Teufel combines tradition with contemporary accessibility, which gives it a special meaning in the region. The history of the Krampusses and Perchten is kept alive and at the same time conveyed to the next generation, so that the cultural roots in Salzburg are not forgotten.
