A moving campaign is starting in Salzburg under the motto “16 Days Against Violence”, which is aimed at women and girls on the occasion of the global campaign against violence. The aim of the initiative is to encourage people to take action when they witness violence. With prominent support - including opera singer Rolando Villazón, celebrity chef Didi Maier and best-selling author Mareike Fallwickl - the appeal to pay attention to this serious issue is being strengthened.
The figures from last year are alarming: In Salzburg, over 1,200 violent crimes were registered in private environments and 850 entry and approach bans were issued. These statistics illustrate the urgency of addressing the issue.
An urgent appeal
At the press conference to launch the campaign, State Councilor for Women Daniela Gutschi left no doubt that violence against women is unacceptable. “My appeal to everyone: take a look, take a stand and prevent violence!” she emphasized. It is important that this call does not end after the 16 days, but is continued.
City councilor Andrea Brandner explained that any form of violence represents an infringement on human rights. The city of Salzburg wants to raise awareness and strengthen those affected. “Protection from violence concerns us all,” said Brandner. This campaign sends a clear signal: violence has no place in our society.
Celebrity chef Didi Maier is also a face of the campaign and highlights that violence against women is a daily reality, both online and offline. “Zero tolerance and no acceptance!” – with this clear message he calls for an active attitude.
Prominent support and actions
There are also top-class testimonials such as the Austrian national champion in wheelchair tennis, Tina Pesendorfer, who herself has had experiences with violent relationships. She advocates strengthening women's rights, which she sees as the first step towards ending violence against women.
The campaign will be supported from November 25th to December 10th through various media formats such as TV and radio spots, posters and online campaigns. Information and offers of help are also available via brochures in shops and public transport. The community also participates in the visibility of the purple campaign flag.
In addition, various events are planned during the campaign period - from lectures to readings to cinema evenings. These offerings aim to raise awareness of this important issue. All information is available on the State of Salzburg website www.salzburg.gv.at/hilfe-bei-violent to find.
This campaign is an urgent call for everyone to intervene and help when violence is perceived. Hopefully, conscious engagement will bring much-needed change.
