Billa reduces house delivery: A look at the new Click & Collect options
The Supermarket Chain Billa has made a drastic decision: From December 1, 2024, the Austria -wide house delivery outside the greater Vienna area will be discontinued. This step takes place out of economic considerations and affects the entire area outside of Vienna, whereby the delivery will only be continued only in Vienna and in parts of Lower Austria and Burgenland. Billa states that with the two large storage locations in Vienna you can reach about a third of customers in Austria and plan to expand the Click & Collect business while intensifying cooperation with the delivery service Foodora at the same time.
Against this background, David Renker, the Billa online boss, expressed in a conversation with the "courier" that the demand in online trading did not decrease, but could not be recorded significantly, especially not in rural areas. Despite these restrictions, Renker plans to double online sales within the next three years.New delivery area and effects on external deliverers
The new District area of Billa will in future include a route from Mistelbach in the north to Wiener Neustadt in south and from St. Pölten in the west to Bruck an der Leitha in the east. The hiring of comprehensive house delivery will in particular make external deliverers who work for other companies. In addition, Billa will deliver smaller orders via Foodora in urban centers such as Vienna, Graz, Linz, Traun and Innsbruck, with an extension of this service to the city of Salzburg from November 26th.
A new focus is on the Click & Collect service, in which customers can pre-order their purchases online and then collect directly in the branch. By the end of the year, specially set up parking spaces and switches for Click & Collect customers are available in all Billa-Plus branches.
The development of the online business since 2015
In 2015,Billa set the course for intensifying the online business when a comprehensive range of goods on the Internet was offered in addition to the traditional branch. The first own warehouse for online orders were opened in Vienna in 2017 and 2020. In the early years of the Covid 19 pandemic, the online trade experienced a strong increase. However, this development has been meager with the beginning of economic challenges and inflation.
in Vienna, where the competition among food dealers such as Hofer, Interspar and others is particularly strong, numerous options are available to customers. For example, Intersper also delivers in the Vienna area and in the vicinity of Salzburg. The discounter Hofer starts the race when it comes to delivery with the partner Roksh. Nevertheless, some long-time players, including the Tyrolean supermarket chain MPRIS and the Nahe supplier Unimarkt from Upper Austria, have closed their online shop in 2023 for economic reasons.
The direct online sales of Billa added up to 78 million euros in 2023, while the sales of BIPA were 25 million euros. The total turnover of the Billa Group, including all subsidiaries, reached 10.45 billion euros in the current year, which corresponds to an increase of 9.6 percent
The background of the decision of Billa to reduce its delivery area and to concentrate on the greater Vienna area are complex and require a closer look in order to be able to understand the current developments in the Austrian food.
