Political chaos in Salzburg: Who will be the new governor?

The political landscape in Salzburg faces an unexpected upheaval: Karoline Edtstadler, previous Federal Minister, is to succeed Governor Wilfried Haslauer from next summer. This was surprisingly announced by the Salzburg People's Party. However, a majority in the state parliament is necessary for the change, which also requires the approval of the coalition partner FPÖ, reports Salzburg.AT.at .

The FPÖ has so far been critical of Edtstadler's political role, especially during corona pandemic. Surprisingly, Stefan Schnöll was planned as the successor to Haslauer. But these plans have changed: Schnöll has withdrawn his ambitions and no longer wants to run for the office of governor to reduce the pressure on his family. "I brought my daughter to kindergarten last year," said Schnöll, who instead strives for the position of the deputy governor, so Sn.at .

coalition against a new challenge

The decision could soon put the coalition between the ÖVP and FPÖ to the test. Haslauer has already informed the FPÖ about the personnel decision and warns: "If the FPÖ Edtstadler does not choose into office, it would be the end of the coalition." This would result in new elections or change the political orientation to the SPÖ - a development that could cause great unrest in Salzburg. Marlene Svazek, FPÖ boss, announced a party evaluation and emphasized that the FPÖ would be worthwhile that the new governor has already faced the voters.

Edtstadler itself is optimistic: "There is no more exciting task to serve people" and relies on continuity and stability within the state government. Her official election to the governor is on July 2, but until then she has to receive approval from the FPÖ to put her plans into practice.
