Craftsmanship from Salzburg: Award winners shine in new splendor
The quality of the Salzburg craft is again in the spotlight. On the occasion of the awarding of the 34th Handicraft Prize of the Chamber of Commerce, the roofing company Heigl GmbH from Altenmarkt was awarded the winner in 2024. This honor not only emphasizes high skills, but also the innovative strength in the regional trade.
For the project of the "Energy crystal" mountain station on the Dachstein, which was implemented at a proud 2,700 meters, the Heigl roofing company demonstrated a spectacular performance. A total of 4,600 square meters of roof and facade surfaces were provided with an integrated photovoltaic system. In these work, which took place between August 2023 and May 2024 in any weather, the craftsmen had to deal with adverse conditions, as Bernhard Heigl reported. Despite the challenges, such as strong snowfall, the team was able to successfully deliver under the leadership of the experienced foreman Herbert Pichler. The mountain station now produces remarkable 80 percent of its energy requirement.
aesthetics meets tradition: Kappeller and its art knives
Richard Kappeller GmbH, known for exquisite knife art. With the "Epoch trip" drinking knife, Kappeller combines traditional handicraft techniques with modern design elements. Each knife is provided with a striking silver grip, which shows artistic engravings from different eras, from the Renaissance to Art Nouveau. This knife is not only a kitchen tool, but also a work of art and was already exhibited at the Venice Biennale. Kappeller is now mobilizing his creations for exhibitions in the Asian region.
recognition for outstanding services
In addition to the main prices, another three Salzburg craft businesses were awarded recognition prices. The carpentry Johannes Seidl in Kuchl was honored for the "room flapper", a multifunctional piece of furniture that combines sleep and work areas in the smallest of space. The folding mechanism enables a simple change between bed and desk, which is particularly important in urban environments.
A special mention was given to Stockinger & Reinthaler Bau GmbH, which was awarded for the careful revitalization of a baroque house in Salzburg. Here, emphasis was placed on a resource-saving renovation, with historical elements, such as the Rococo-Stuck, being lovingly restored. The interior of the building was functionalized by targeted conversions and thus upgraded.
The manual excellence in Salzburg proves to be sustainable and innovative. The award winners are exemplary for the high quality of the regional craft that skillfully combines tradition and modernity.
Another award winner was the instrument maker Tobias Falkner from Scheffau. His handmade bass trumpet model, which he developed in cooperation with the bass trumpeter David Vierthaler, represents a combination of traditional production and modern sound design.
