Russia and Ukraine: Next round of negotiations in Istanbul is imminent!

On Monday, May 29, 2025, Russia proposes a second round of talks with Ukraine via a ceasefire to take place in Istanbul. The Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lawrow announced this. He announced that the Russian delegation would present a memorandum that deals with the basic causes of the crisis. Ukraine expects Russia to send this document immediately in order not to fail the meeting. The Ukrainian Minister of Defense Rustem Umjerow has already handed over a document with the position of Ukraine to the Russian chief trader and confirms the willingness to complete and unconditional ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj, who calls for more international pressure on Russia, currently sees no signs of a willingness of Vladimir Putin to end the war. He emphasizes that just peace may only be possible after Putin's departure, while a ceasefire could start immediately. Selenskyj's demand for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire is aimed at reducing the conflict escalation and is supported by his European allies.

Whether President Putin will personally take part in the talks remains unclear. While Russia is willing to discuss every point of a possible agreement, including the international recognition of the Crimea and other occupied regions, Ukraine remains at a specific answer. Umjerow pointed out that the Russian side still has at least four days until its departure to prepare the document.

Current conflict situation

In addition to the tense negotiation situation, there are reports that Ukraine is preparing for a possible major attack in Russia in the northeast. According to estimates, Russia gathered around 50,000 soldiers in the Sumy region. Last weekend there were also intensive drone attacks on the part of Russia, while Ukrainian drones in Moscow caused excitement, which led to temporary restrictions on airport at Wnukowo airport.

also said US President Donald Trump that he was disappointed with the developments during the negotiations and that he is putting an ultimatum on Putin. Despite these recent tensions, the international community remains vigilant. The EU and the United States have announced that Istanbul will be waiting for further sanctions against Russia.

The upcoming negotiations in Istanbul should be crucial for the further course of the conflict, especially with regard to the question of whether there may be a ceasefire and, if necessary, a peace solution. The pressure on the Kremlin has risen by Selenskyj's announcement of being personally in Istanbul.
