Rescuer in need: Mödling fire department frees falcons from life-threatening nest!

On May 1, 2025, the Mödling fire department in Lower Austria was alerted to a remarkable operation. Around noon, firefighters received a call from a passerby who discovered a hawk entangled in a sycamore tree. The emergency services immediately made their way to the scene.

The situation was serious as the falcon was trapped on plastic threads that it had used to build its nest. This plastic wool had trapped him in a dangerous situation. An aerial rescue vehicle was used to assist the bird and the road had to be closed during the operation to ensure safe access for firefighters.

Saving the Falcon

After the incident commander conducted the initial reconnaissance, the firefighters worked carefully to free the entangled falcon. Using scissors, they cut the plastic threads holding the bird in place and made sure to remove any remaining plastic on the ground. This measure was important to ensure that similar incidents could be avoided in the future.

After about an hour of operation, the fire brigade was able to successfully free the falcon. After ensuring that the bird was unharmed, it was released back into the wild. The Mödling fire department was proud to report that they had successfully completed the animal rescue.

Prevention measures against plastic waste

In addition to rescuing the falcon, emergency responders took steps to remove any plastic threads they could find from the nest. This decision highlights the need to take the problem of plastic waste in nature seriously and take proactive steps to ensure the safety of wildlife. Birds and other animals are always in danger from garbage and need help.

Such operations, like that of the Mödling fire department, not only help save a single animal, but also raise public awareness of the dangers posed by plastic waste in nature. Incidents like this can remind us of the importance of keeping our environment clean and protecting wildlife.
