Travel wave in Austria: mega traffic jams and 5 hours of waiting!
On June 14, 2025, there were considerable traffic jams in Austria, which were caused by a massive travel wave. In particular, the Tauern Autobahn (A10) was affected, where, according to [OE24], almost four hours of time was found. Confederation stretched out on the A10 from Knot Salzburg to the construction site near Golling, where traffic temporarily stalled up to 25 kilometers.
Already on Pentecost Saturday, a particularly busy day, the Situation in Salzburg was critical. A 40 -kilometer traffic jam formed, which caused a backlog of up to 45 kilometers to the Bavarian Neukirchen on Sundays at Golling, as reported [the press]. ÖAMTC spokesman only expected the situation to relax after 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. At noon, the waiting time before the Golling construction site was around five hours.
traffic chaos and diversions
Traffic traffic increased heavily in Tyrol from the early morning. There were delays on the burner highway (A13) between knot Innsbruck and Nößlach, which were up to 30 minutes. In the area of Innsbruck, on the A12 and A13, a dense column traffic took place on the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9).
In addition to the A10, the B159 was temporarily overloaded, while the Salzachtal Bundesstraße, which runs parallel to the motorway, was also severely affected. Long -distance passes such as the B179 had to be carried out blocked off to regulate traffic. In the night hours, the situation improved only minimally, which caused travelers to use supermarket parking spaces for a short recovery.
The development of the road network
Austria has an extensive road network of around 127,000 kilometers, which is around 22 times larger than the rail network of 5,600 kilometers. From 2000 to 2020, the network of highways and expressways grew by around 17 percent. During this time, the proportion of motorway sections increased with three or more traces from 5 to 18 percent.
A total of 2,249 kilometers of highways and expressways are available in Austria, which corresponds to more than 250 kilometers per million inhabitants. Compared to the EU, Austria has around 50 percent larger high -ranking road network. This infrastructure has proven to be increasingly important, not only for the local, but also for tourist traffic, especially on traffic peaks like at Pentecost.
The current traffic jams are an indication of the challenges that the Austrian road network faces, especially during high season phases such as the Pentecost weekend. With the continuous increase in travel traffic, it is crucial that the street infrastructure is being further developed.
