Against violence against women: SJ Linz-Land urgently calls for more resources

A sensational media campaign by the Socialist Youth took place in Linz-Land on November 27th. As part of the “16 days against violence against women” campaign, the members sent a clear signal to draw attention to the major problem of violence against women. The call was made to increase financial support for protection against violence in order to provide more effective support to the women affected.

“Statistically speaking, every third woman experiences sexual violence in her life,” explained Alena Rigler, chairwoman of the Socialist Youth Linz-Land. To illustrate this frightening reality, one in three chairs remained empty during the action. This was a powerful symbol for the women who have to suffer this violence.

Calls for more support

Rigler also addressed the serious problems that many women's shelters face. “Underfunding is a major obstacle,” she emphasized. Particularly in rural regions, there is often a lack of adequate services that offer support to women in crisis situations. “It is essential to expand assistance offerings while promoting preventive measures that question traditional gender roles and support non-violent conflict resolution,” Rigler added.

Given the increasing number of femicides, this issue regularly receives public attention, but it is often exploited by populist parties such as the ÖVP and FPÖ. “These parties are using the issue to spread racist messages while at the same time neglecting the actual responsibility and support for women's shelters,” criticized Rigler sharply. She stressed the need for real action to improve the situation of women. “In order to promote quality of life without fear, we urgently need political changes,” said Rigler.

The Socialist Youth is calling for an increase in funding of 228 million euros, as proposed by the autonomous women's shelters. “A life without fear must be possible for all women,” she concluded her speech. The urgency of these demands is obvious and requires immediate and serious discussion in the political landscape.
