Steyr sets signs against violence: 16 days in the fight for women's rights
In Steyr, a strong sign against violence is set. In the campaign period "16 days against violence", which is located between the international day against violence on women on November 25th and the international day of human rights on December 10th, committed groups in the city mobilize.
The "Alliance March 8", an association of women from various political and civil society organizations, has launched this initiative. In order to underline the message, the flag "Terre des Femmes" on the City Point and the flag of the "Orange the World" campaign were hoisted at the town hall. The Steyr Bridge also shines in orange-colored lighting, which symbolizes the fight against violence on women.
the need for action
SPÖ national councilor Katrin Auer, who is also active as a city councilor for women's matters, emphasizes the importance of this campaign: "The action is intended to raise awareness that violence against women is still one of the most widespread human rights violations." These words underline the urgency with which political and social measures must be taken.
The terrifying statistics illustrate the urgency of the topic: In Austria alone, 24 women were victims of female this year. Femicide is the intentional killing of a woman by a man, often motivated by traditional, patriarchal role expectations. There were also 34 suspected attempts at murder and serious acts of violence against women, committed through (ex) partners or family members.
In Steyr there is support for women who are affected by violence. The women's shelter offers an important point of contact for abused women and their children who are looking for protection and refuge. An employee can be reached around the clock on 07252 87700 that provides immediate help and offers support.
The action is therefore not just a symbolic gesture, but a call to sensitization and action in society in order to take the suffering and problems of women seriously and to fight.
