Local core development in Lower Austria: new perspectives and challenges

In the most recent meeting of the Waldviertel regulars' table in the Gasthof Klang in Echsenbach, around 430 mayors, community sandats and representatives of the village and urban renewal association gathered. The exchange took place in the context of the planned revitalization of the town center, an important topic for the communities in Lower Austria.

"The village and urban renewal in Lower Austria shows clear progress, because 78 new clubs were founded, and as part of the funding campaign 'pride in our village', over 250 projects were approved," said LH deputy Stephan Pernkopf. The development of the town center is now a central concern, for which the expert Daniel Brühl was appointed as coordinator. His goal is to provide advice to the communities.

challenges for the communities

However, the municipal representatives face major challenges. Johannes Pressl, President of the Community Association, pointed out that the financial situation of many communities is critical. It is expected that 200 of the 573 municipalities will no longer be able to cover their expenses through the income in the coming year. "Saving is necessary, but we still want to give the communities the opportunity to develop further," emphasized Pressl.

As part of the meeting, the progress in developing guiding principles for each community was also discussed. A citizen participation process is sought to actively involve the population. Martin Ruhrhofer, managing director of the village and urban renewal, announced a free town center check for the communities, which is supposed to serve as support.

honors at anniversary communities

The anniversary communities of the Zwettl district, which were awarded for their longstanding membership, were particularly celebrated. Allensteig and Schwarzenau were honored for 25 years for 25 years, Bad Traunstein and Schweiggers for 15 years as well as Arbesbach for 5 years. Furthermore, the village and urban renewal clubs, which had already carried out projects this year, received “pride in my village” boards. In this context, the former head of the Waldviertel office of Lower Austria Regional, Josef Strummer, was retired.

In Echsenbach, the participants received valuable information on energy communities and the future energy supply in Lower Austria. The climate allies have been making an important contribution to the implementation of necessary adjustments in energy policy for over 30 years. "We have the opportunity to incorporate the ideas of the citizens into the future strategy," said Mayor Karl Elsigan about an exchange in Schwarzenau.

This regulars' table not only offered a platform to exchange ideas, but also the opportunity to make the basic challenges of the communities visible. The event made it clear how important it is that the municipalities work together on solutions and the citizens are actively involved.
