Life work of a Haslacher original: Farewell to Sepp Schaubschläger

On November 16, 2023, Sepp Schaubschläger, the long -time local archivist of Haslach, died at the age of 98. With his death, the community not only loses an important guardian of local history, but also a formative personality who preserved the memory of Haslach for over three decades.

The northwest of Upper Austria is known for its rich history. In the middle of this historical landscape, the archive was in the Haslacher town hall of Schaubschläger's refuge. Sepp Schaubschläger had taken a remarkable place in the community. Whether Hussites, the former ring wall or the development of local schools - his archive was a lively evidence of contemporary history.

a passionate collector

His meticulous work was characterized by a deep passion for the local heritage. Sepp Schaubschläger collected and maintained an extensive writing and cultural asset. He wrote down the stories of his hometown over 546 pages, from the earliest stone lines to the difficulties of the 1930s. Norbert Leitner, the former chairman of the home association, recognizes his commitment and describes how Schaubläger was always willing to pass on knowledge.

Sepp Schaubschläger discovered the value of old documents and the need to preserve them for future generations. He was not only an archive provider, but also a storyteller who led people through Haslach's past. His commitment was finally recognized in 1994 with the cultural medal of the state of Upper Austria.

technological change

Interestingly, Sepp Schaubschläger was skeptical about new technologies at the beginning of his archive work. He only started using computers in 1993 after he had previously documented everything manually. This speaks for his impressive commitment to prepare history for posterity long before digitization became the standard.

Although he had suffered health setbacks in recent years, he remained active until old age. His daughter Eva regularly visited him in the old people's home, which brought him comfort in difficult times. This loving connection kept him alive and offered him the opportunity to continue to reflect on his memories.

Sepp Schaubschläger will not only be remembered by his written records, but also by the traces that he left in the community. The next generation will continue his inheritance and the archive, which he has looked after with so much dedication.

A farewell service for Sepp Schaubschläger will take place on Friday, November 22nd, at 2 p.m. in the parish church of Haslach. The community commemorates a man whose name is inextricably linked to the history of Haslach, and whose life's work is not forgotten.
